Valero Refuels the Opportunity Engine

EXP is proud to be among 6 local recipients of the 2022 Valero Benefit for Children grant!

“Right now, charity wins every round in the greater Los Angeles area,” said Kyle Sharon, Vice President and General Manager of the Valero Wilmington Refinery. “We’re proud to partner with these agencies and work together to improve children’s lives in Wilmington, Long Beach, and the greater Los Angeles Area.”

Thank you, Valero, for your continued support as a Lead Partner!

Support EXP at State of the Port

Returning live and in-person on Thursday, Jan. 19, at noon, join the Port of Los Angeles and Pacific Merchant Shipping Association at the World Cruise Center for the 2023 State of the Port event! Port of Los Angeles Executive Director, Gene Seroka, will provide an overview of cargo numbers, key community initiatives, and Port priorities for the future. All event proceeds benefit EXP and the International Seafarers Center of LA/LB.

Growing into Orange County

We look forward to expanding our reach into Orange County in January as a partner of OC Pathways! EXP will provide OC Pathways’ partner school districts with our work-based learning programs and signature events starting in January 2023. Women in STEM Career Day will be our first signature event open to OC schools.

A recent recipient of the state’s $18.8 million Regional K-16 Education Collaboratives Grant, OC Pathways is an Orange County-wide consortium that creates work-based learning opportunities for students and empowers educators with 21st-century learning strategies.

For more information about EXP’s program for OC students, contact the Director of Program Development and Strategic Initiatives, Lisa Lampon, at lisalampon@expfuture.org.

Partner Spotlight: Watson Land Company

Watson Land Company has always been a partner of the Carson community, just as they have always been a supportive EXP partner. With Watson Land Company seed funding to start an advisory board for the Global Business Academy at Carson High School, we started our work at the school in 2007. In 2017, Watson Land expanded their support, enabling us to grow our work to include Rancho Dominguez Preparatory School.

Today, their commitment to the community takes many forms, including hosting summer interns and sponsoring signature career discovery programs like GPS Your Future®.

We are grateful for Watson Land’s unwavering support!

EXP Staff Update

Ms. Levingston Goes to Washington!

EXP Program Manager and Young Fellows Program Lead, Eva Levingston, has received a scholarship to attend the National Mentoring Summit in Washington D.C. in January! She will attend the 4-day summit and represent EXP on Capitol Hill Day, an important advocacy event that connects Members of Congress and their staff to summit participants from across the country.

This event presents opportunities for political leaders and participants to discuss the critical issues facing the nation’s youth, and the legislation and policies they can implement to expand access to quality mentoring opportunities.

Way to go, Eva!

Welcome new team member: Judy Ramos

JUDY RAMOS

Marketing & Event Coordinator

Judy is currently in her second week at EXP, but she is no stranger to our organization. We know her from her previous position as the Program Coordinator at The Nonprofit Partnership, where she coordinated the training workshops and events, and developed their e-newsletters. (And she will now be working on the future Insider!)

Most recently, Judy was a Student Experience Records Coordinator at Universal Technical Institute (UTI). In this role, she provided students with access to information and resources requested, and coordinated their bi-monthly graduation ceremonies.

Judy earned a BA in Environmental Studies and Sociology from UC Santa Barbara.
