EXP WELCOMES AWARD-WINNING NONPROFIT LEADER MARY TRAN AS NEW CEO IN CONTINUATION OF COMMITMENT TO STUDENT SUCCESS

CARSON, Calif., Aug. 16, 2023 — EXP - the opportunity engine, a leading organization dedicated to preparing students for success in school, career and life, introduces Mary Tran as its new CEO, effective immediately. With a vital mission and vision, EXP aims to empower students and provide them with the necessary tools and support to thrive in the rapidly evolving world.

Tran brings a wealth of experience and a deep passion for students to her new role as CEO. EXP worked with Envision Consulting to complete its six-month search for its new CEO. 

Tran’s bio reveals a record of accomplishments in career technical education, highlighting her dedication to unlocking the potential of every student and ensuring they are well-prepared for their futures. [Read Tran’s full bio here.] In recognition of her unwavering dedication to uplifting the community, the Santa Ana Chamber of Commerce recognized Tran among its 2023 Difference Makers as the Small Nonprofit Leader of the Year.

Previously as the executive director for High School Inc. Academies Foundation, Tran’s led the organization through evolution by transforming its strategic direction, forging vital partnerships, and elevating program efficiencies and effectiveness. Her leadership increased the organization’s impact, serving over 1,700 students annually with an average graduation rate of 98%. 

“I am humbled to step into the role of CEO for EXP. My heart overflows with anticipation and enthusiasm as we embark on the next evolution of EXP, deepening its relationships in Los Angeles, Long Beach and Barstow and growing its transformative journey in Orange County,” Tran said. “With ‘EXPerience, EXPloration and EXPanding’ opportunities at our core, we can unleash boundless potential in every student, fostering a future where equity and opportunity thrive. I am honored to lead the way.” 

Tran’s journey as a daughter of refugee parents and a first-generation student drives her unwavering commitment to equity for all students. Her empathy, resilience, and determination empower her to challenge the status quo, reshape educational systems, and create a future where every student, regardless of their background, has an equal chance to succeed and thrive. By leveraging her experiences, Tran fosters a culture of understanding, compassion, and inclusivity, paving the way for a more equitable and just educational landscape for future generations. 

“Mary brings with her an unparalleled passion, dedication and a proven record of spearheading profound evolution. She embraces innovative educational strategies and adapts adeptly to the dynamic needs of students,” said Telebah Woods, chair of the EXP board of directors. “Mary understands the importance of college and career readiness, and has extensive expertise in workforce development. She will use her knowledge to help ensure that EXP remains at the forefront of preparing students for triumph in an ever-evolving world.”

EXP also recognizes outgoing CEO Amy Grat for her exceptional 13 years of leadership. Under her guidance, the organization experienced tremendous growth and maintained its commitment to student success.

“When I took over this organization from our founder Carol Rowen, I promised her I would sustain and grow her vision of a united community of business people, educators and parents, working together to prepare students for success in school, career and life,” Grat said. “As EXP has evolved, this commitment to student success has remained strong. This is why I am so happy that the board has chosen Mary as the next keeper of the EXP promise. She brings a deep passion for students, a keen understanding of best practices in career technical education and workforce development, and a vision for building the EXP family lifelong and worldwide. Carol would heartily approve.

In 1999, Rowen formed the International Trade Education Programs, Inc. (ITEP) to assess the needs of Los Angeles-area high school students and transportation and logistics industries. ITEP rebranded to EXP in 2018.

In September, EXP will introduce Tran to its community partners and supporters through small group meetings and a welcoming reception.
